moving in.. .

I don’t know how to begin.

I’ll start with what I know.

My name is Samuel Weston, I’m 18, and I just moved from small town-Muncy, Pennsylvania to big town-Chicago, Illinois. And I’m tired.

Today, [Wednesday] I moved into what will be my home for the next four months. It’s a  “luxury suite accommodated with all the amenities” AKA an apartment in a high rise with a laundromat and miniature grocery store. Excluding the dull color scheme and awkward floor plan, its very nice –much nicer than an average “first apartment.”

Last night, Mary Joe and I rented the movie “The Day After Tomorrow” because earlier that day we were talking about end-of-the-world scenarios; it was very relaxing. I ate some basically raw chicken and when pointing out my aunts cooking skills (or lack there of) “OH. I’m so glad you didn’t die tonight!” was her response. I love how she makes me laugh. My raw chicken & a movie date was followed by a freak-the-fuck-out-because-i-move-in-with-3-strangers-tomorrow packing session. That was highly enjoyable. [and that was sarcasm] I spent the entire late night packing up my clothes and other apartment-ware, when I had successfully boxed and then stacked everything I owned in the hall, I took a hot bath, hoping that it would relax me and lower my tense shoulders down from my ears. It didn’t.

Back to today.

Mary Joe and I set our alarm clocks to wake us up at a hideous 7:00 am, so naturally we woke up at 8:15.  Finished packing, loaded the car, made a quick run to target and then went to Harrington [the design school I attend] thinking I would be meeting my roommates and all the other students that would be moving into student housing. Well.. . I was half right, I met everyone that was moving into student housing, a whooping 2 girls! So they walked us through the lease and I asked some questions. Made a joke about my lack of affection for Pennsylvania and then it was over.

[I forgot to say that the lack of students at this meeting made me realize that my roommates would have already been living in the apartment, and not moving in with me]

We drove to my building. Loaded my shit onto a wretched little bellman cart and stumbled to my new apartment, knocked on the door, and was greeted by Alex. Alex, is my ”bedroommate” [I share my bedroom with him] he a nerdy little white boy in the best way possible, very sweet and eager to please. He’s a video game design major at some school that I forget the name of. [None of my roommates go to Harrington it turns out] He said he’s “a big gamer and a BIG anime fan!” I met my other housemates, Deshawn & Reggie [-short for Reginald which is just the BEST name] Reggie seems nice I didn’t talk to him much, but he cleared me my own cabinet in the kitchen, Deshawn seems really great, he was the only one that shook my hand and looked me in the eye when introducing himself.  All in all my roommates are great, I don’t think any of them will become a close friend because we have next to nothing in common; but they are highly tolerable! I’m happy.

So it’s official:

I   LIVE   IN   CHICAGO   !!

  1. Awww I am glad that you are making a blog about your new experience. I wish that I would have done the same! Can't wait to read more and I am glad that your roommates are tolerable. That's the best you can hope for lol

  2. I remember how terrified I was when I first went to college (FROM Chicago to Utah - no I'm not a Mormon, not that there's anything wrong with that, heh.). I was SO homesick when I got out there and questioned everything I'd done to get there. Then, I met my roommate and saw a friend that had also planned on going to the U of Utah and all the fear and dread went away. Forever.
Have a blast, Sam. And do your homework. And don't eat Mary Joe's chicken no mo'!
